Wow, I'm the first commenter today! In south central Florida our seasons are different from most places, of course. Temperatures are cooler in the winter than in other months, but our winter would seem like spring to residents of colder climates. When calendar spring arrives, our temps are really rising. At this point, I'm inspired to make plans for doing projects inside during the coming months, rather than outside, because outside is going to get really hot really fast! My southeast facing studio can be kept cool with the air conditioner and ceiling fan, and I feel lucky to be able to play in here on hot, glaring summer afternoons. So about this time, So I'm trying to get my ducks in a row for some quality beat-the-heat-in-my-studio time. And do I use recycled materials? Of course! ReplyDeleteI did not even know this blog existed, though I am a subsscriber to the YOC blog. Hmm, always did think I live in a cave (metaphorically; would love to live in one in reality but there is a shortage of suitable limestone this near the ocean in Maryland. (chuckle)
ReplyDeleteI like to recycle in my art but I do less of it than you might think since I have so much first-time-around stuff in my life. :P I did make a satisfying piece of art using a very antique quilt block some time ago (you can see it at http://seminolelinda.typepad.com/fiber_and_pulp/2008/01/ive-actually-be.html.

ReplyDeleteSo enjoying the new fresh colour theme this month and that relates to how Spring inspires me. I want to use greens and purples and also sky blue-any colour that is fresh and Spring like! I also seem to take on far more projects than I can actually manage due to general over enthusiasm caused by the warmer weather and more light.
At the moment I am making a doll using mainly recycled materials-I am currently making her skirt from shredded newspaper from a recent parcel. I also recycle good packaging in the form of storage-sometimes decorated and sometimes not.

ReplyDeleteI'm always inspired in Spring, mostly by the change in nature, everything starting to shoot up and things getting greener - a real sense of hope!
Yes, I repurpose all the time, it makes me feel good! I make old sweaters into new felted bags. I reuse all kinds of scraps for my ATC's, and I even made my daughter a super cute pillow out of an old knitted skirt I'd made her that is now too small!

ReplyDeleteReuse/repurpose/recycle: In my business (stationery) there are MANY printing errors that occur...instead of throwing these items in the recycle bin, I've started punching out tabs or tags which incorporate the pretty designs and include these as thank yous for my customers.

ReplyDeleteLiving in Colorado where the four seasons are distinctly visible means we have a very brown winter. Spring is awesome. This spring, in particular, a jump in temperature followed a couple of snow storms. Every shade of green bursting forth in a very short time is incredible. The poeticus daffodils were fragrant beyond belief. The iris are preparing for a grand show this week. It's comforting to know this season will always refresh us. Flowers are a staple in my art. Each year it seems that new views "spring" into the studio.
Recycle? Oh my! Having lived through the depression, my parents and grandparents taught us so much about making do. A lonely tin can could patch a hole in the roof. That could be why I'm so selective about what goes into the recycle bin. Items that have "possibility" are kept for projects to the dismay of Husband. It is so fun to share an art project and have someone ask "what's that?."
Don't throw out the wrapping from your Mother's Day flowers. Try heating a piece of florist cellophane with a heat tool. You'll get a fun bit of texture for a project. Paint it with a light coat of acrylic paint before heating and you'll get an entirely different look. Add glitter to the wet paint... ooo aah. Run with it.

I am inspired by the colors of spring - around here we go from whites and grays to the most brilliant greens, blues and then waves of colors from flowers - first the yellows and red, followed by blues and purples and then it settles into pastels of all hues.
ReplyDeleteI have always repurposed/recycled items for crafty projects. I used to use the scraps of fabric from my mom's projects to make doll clothes and fashion items for myself and still do similar things today...nothing goes to waste if I can help it.

ReplyDeleteI love to reuse packaging...boxes, tissue paper, cardboard with punch outs and designs...especially Prima packaging..its so pretty...I am always reuseing broken jewelry for art projects and fabrics from old clothes.
Spring is my favorite because of all the colorful flowers blooming..purple lilacs, pink roses, and magnolias. Happy, warm colors..I also love the angle of the sun thru my windows...It creates a warm homey feeling. :)

I love the colors of spring and especially the flowers blooming. I am primarily a jeweler, so I try to incorporate the lovely color palettes that I see in the spring flowers into my creations. I try to use beads with flowers or create my own flower shapes with seed beads. I also take the opportunity to bead at my outside table as much as I can-although I do lose some beads in the deck boards! LOL
ReplyDeleteI love to use vintage pieces in my jewelry, I just made a beautiful necklace from an earring that I found in a bag of junk jewelry at a flea market. I am trying out new ways of using vintage finds and recycled finds in my pieces - old clip on earrings are very fun!
Also, I have been playing with using my favorite scrapbook embellishments in my designs. I have been inspired to paint clear beads (lucite) with acrylic paint and/or glimmer mist.

ReplyDeleteEven though I live in a warm climate all year round-similar to Florida-spring here brings lots of rain which means everything is really green and certain trees are flowering now and look beautiful. So, the rain keeps me indoors which is good for crafting.
reusing materials-
I try to reuse as much as I can-for example I use vintage buttons to make rings and beads from old neckklaces also get a new look.
Loved the tutorial by Tracy and can't wait to try it myself.

ReplyDeleteInspired by spring: the possibilities. Watching nature awaken from her winter's nap and burst into bloom, planning projects and believing it will be possible to get them all done! ; )
Re-use/Re-cycle: I love re-using and recycling--good for the earth and good for creativity! A few basic things I do: use cereal (etc.) boxes and scraps of paper glued together to die cut shapes. I'm also putting together some kids' art project for this summer using primarily recycled and reused materials. My favorite so far is the mermaid made out of a tin can and a empty plastic squeeze lemon.

Spring? What's that? Here it is, early May and our Central Texas temperatures are already up in the 90s. I love the two weeks of spring-like weather we get, and tend to spend a lot of it outside. It is the only time of the year when things are green! Green is one of my favorite colors and seeing it all around inspires me to garden, to sew, to play with my little girl, to organize, to clean, to relax!
*Do you re-use or re-purpose materials in your art...and how?
Oh my, do I ever? I have a huge walk-in closet in my workroom and it is filled with hand me down fabric, thrift fabric, odds and ends fabric, old clothes but great fabric-fabric, I love it all. I just walk in there and see what catches my eye that moment and make something.

the new life in my garden, regrowth and colour but mainly the birds and their beautiful babies they have inspired my art work for the last few years.
Do you re-use or re-purpose materials in your art...and how?
most definitely I struggle to throw anything away these day but mostly fabric gets recycled in patchwork and fabric collage and I search for usual fabrics in junk and charity shops and reuse them!

With Spring you feel "anything goes" its very exciting, no rules. As far as re-use, unless it's beyond any hope, which most things can be reused if you look outside the box, I save it, I have granddaughters and friends who love to play and create. ReplyDeleteSpring is my fa season. new buds on the forsythia bush and then the azaleas bloom... color everywhere starts to pop and feel fresh and new. it makes me want to paint!
Do you reuse or repurpose materials in your art? I'm a natural born hoarder and child of depression era parents. My first artful experiences came from reusing greeting cards and wrapping paper, sewing doll clothes from torn clothing, and I save every cereal box ofr making or shipping items. Reusing and repurposing is my fav from of artist fun.It's wonderfl to see all the colorful blossoms made from scraps!

So of course I repurpose everything from catalogs that become glue sheets to old buttons that embellish. I LOVE putting together themed collage packs to sell full of totally recycled vintage goodies!

I am inspired by the gorgeous colors of spring and the presence of so much new life....plants and birds and animals. The colors of green inspired my new dining room color in my 150+ year-old house, and the bedroom, also. The hall and kitchen a now a gorgeous yellow and the living room is robin's egg blue.

Springtime in North Florida comes early, but it's still lovely - flowering trees, azaleas -and always fun to watch the birds as they stop on their return to their northern homes or start their nests here. This is the best time of year to be outside, so we plan indoor activities for the heat of summertime. Spring is inspiring with all the colors, new growth, and birds.
ReplyDeleteAs for recycling, repurposing, that's always been a way of life for us! Hate to throw anything away, which leads to a lot of "clutter" or project material, depending on your point of view. So much great packaging can be reused for cards, in scrapbooking, etc.
Loving the whole AYOC experience, and enjoying these tutorials. Will have to make some of these latest cuties!

I am so glad I still had time to enter. How cute is that. I have been making small flowers and little similar for my daughters to clip on their flip flops. The love them and want them in all different colors. Spring always inspires me to decorate my home with birds, nests and birdcages. I always get excited and inspired on the first trip to the nursery to see the all the flowers in so many colors. It is just a great time of the year! Happy Spring!
